Today, social media is a part of our everyday lives. Every time we see or experience something, we tweet about it or make a status. Even college admissions offices and employers use social media to help determine if a potential student or employee is suitable for their institution or place of business.
Benefits of social media include receiving instant news updates on occurrences happening locally and across the world. Many news stations have Twitter accounts which users can follow and receive updates from in their timelines. Twitter and Facebook users can also market their businesses through social media. Being connected to social media allows entrepreneurs and large companies to connect to wide ranges of people at a fast rate.
Being connected to social media has its drawbacks too. This is especially true for people seeking employment or admission into an institution. Anything you post on the internet can be seen by anyone and once it is out there for everyone to view, you cannot take it back.
Even school administrators use social media to monitor what students are doing online pertaining to their institution. Educators can simply search the name of a school in order to see what accounts have been tweeting about it. Posting anything online that is threatening to an institution can result in detention, suspension, or even expulsion. As a result, students must be very cautious of what they post online.
Senior Elizabeth Toye says, “Do not post anything on social media that you would not want your mother to see. What you aspire to do in the future depends on what you are doing now.”
