During the early 2000s, CDs were a popular thing to have. Whenever you got into your parents or a friends’ car, there was sure to be one in there somewhere. Unfortunately in today’s world, CDs are a waste of time and resources.
With all the advances in technology, CDs have become a lost cause. Just this year, the sales in CDs have gone down 13.3 percent according to Billboard.com. People can now download mix-tapes or albums straight to their smart phones. Senior Charles Edge said,“CDs are cool, but I wouldn’t buy one. I might, to support an artist.”
Music artists often complain about the illegal downloading of music because it hurts their sales. It is a common misconception that artists make their money from record sales. Artists tend to earn the majority of their money from concerts and appearances. Junior Heaven Johnson said, “They have to make their money through concerts because no one buys albums anymore. I just illegally download my music.”
Plenty of artists have been successful without an actual studio album. For example, Chance The Rapper and Lil Bibby have both been on worldwide tours and have not been signed to a major record label. Each has produced multiple mix-tapes which generated their buzz, and they took advantage of that to propel their career.
The music industry has changed drastically in the past 10 years and probably will continue to change. Pretty soon, CDs may become a thing of the past. We might even see mix-tapes starting to cost money.
