Recently there was a letter handed to many Academic Center students regarding a scholarship program. Some of us opened the letter and knew what it was about from the start but to others this was a shock.
The Schuler Scholar Program was founded by Jack Schuler and his daughter as a way to give back give back to the community. It serves as a way to give underrepresented and underprivleged students get into prestigious and liberal arts colleges. They also try to make us better students and give us the tools we need to succeed as students and in life. Once in the program, the Schuler Scholar Program exposes scholars to etiquette dinners, operas, and theatre. They also put you through a mandatory Leadership Camp at Camp Manitowish, where Scholars camp out for 10 days and build bonds with other Scholars around the Nation. The Juniors in the program are offered to study internationally. And as for the program success it has 180 scholar graduates and has sent students to such schools as Amherst, Yale, Harvard, and Vanderbilt.
The program started at Waukegan HS in 2002 and has finally in 2015 made its way to Lindblom. To be in the program you have to have certain family circumstances like a family income less than $100,000 or the first in your family to go to college. There are some mandatory meetings but the program recognizes that you are a Eagle before a Scholar and allows you to miss some meetings for performances, meets, or special events.
