For a couple years there have been recycling bins around the school, specifically for chip bags or bottles. This is done by the GoGreen club.
GoGreen was started four years ago by Ms.Copper, with the purpose to “increase students’ awareness of their carbon footprint” according to Ms.Copper. This is also the year they began the end of year locker cleanout. It has expanded since then to include recycling and gardening, which Chief Murfay helps with as well. Ms.Copper wants to “increase ways members have a higher influence on their peers. I would also like to better develop our student leaders.”
Many wonder what happens to the chip bags. They're sent to TerraCycle, an international upcycling and recycling company that collects hard-to-recycle items and transforms them into new products. There are a total of 47 participating students, some have been members for two years. They are divided into different groups based on what they want to work with: recycling, indoor gardening, outdoor gardening, greenhouse maintenance, or an art group.
GoGreen helps the school, as well as the community. They provide the school with free notebooks, paper, binders, and dividers in the beginning of the school year, they germinate the seeds for spring, and they create recycle wreaths during the holidays to donate either to Clara’s House or another community partner. GoGreen plans to have a plant/herb sale, so keep an eye out for that.
