This weekend's debate tournament was a tremendous success. Not only did our school and students host an outstanding events, but our Lindblom team dominated the competition with four of our seven pairs advancing to the elimination rounds.
In the Varsity division, Deshun Peoples and Donald Rapier won four of five preliminary rounds and advanced to the quarterfinals where they were eliminated by a tough Alcott pair.
In the JV division, Joe'Shawn Head, Onintze Contreras, Snow Adams, and Jacob Carnowell won individual speaking awards. Jacob was the top ranked JV speaker. He won all five of his preliminary rounds including three on Saturday by himself. If he had debated with a partner all weekend, he would have advanced to the quarterfinals.
The pairs of Oni and Snow, Joe'Shawn and Imani Ameen, and Malcolm Beason and DeShawn Strong advanced to the JV quarterfinals. Joe'Shawn and Imani "locked out" with Malcolm and DeShawn, so the higher ranked team (Malcolm and DeShawn) were selected to move on to the semifinals. Oni and Snow won their quarterfinal debate and also moved on to the semifinals.
In the semifinals Oni and Snow "locked out" with Malcolm and DeShawn, so (again as the higher ranked team) Malcolm and DeShawn moved on to the JV final round. After a five hour layoff, Malcolm and DeShawn debated against a strong Thomas Kelly team in the Social Room for the JV championship. They were unfortunately defeated, but walked away as the second place team for the tournament.
