One Direction fans around the world rejoiced on November 25 when they were finally able to hear the band’s third studio album, Midnight Memories.
This album is much more mature compared to their previous albums. The band has said that this album would be more ‘rock’ and have more ‘edge’, but the album still has some pop sounds that their fans are accustomed to. This album also showcases the boys’ vocal abilities with Niall and Louis having more solos than the previous albums.
Most of this album was recorded on the road during the band’s Take Me Home Tour. The two singles “Best Song Ever” and “Story of My Life”, show how much the band has grown over the three years they have been together.
The band has said that they were much more involved in the writing and production process of this album. The oldest member of the band, Louis Tomlinson, has the most writing credits with his name on 11 of the 18 songs. One of the tracks, “Happily”, has a Mumford & Sons folk sound.
Senior Shermee Randolph said, “This is my favorite One Direction album to date. I love their new sound and I can’t wait to hear the new songs on tour.”
Senior Cierra Howard said, “It’s more mature. You can see how much they’ve grown as artists from “What Makes You Beautiful” to “Story of My Life”. Similarities to their previous albums is that it’s still of a similar sound and many songs about love and heartbreak, and they’re still awesome singers.”
Some fan favorites are “You & I”, “Better Than Words”, and “Through The Dark”. Four days after release, it was announced that it was the fastest selling album of 2013 in the UK. The album was also #1 in America, selling 546,000 copies in the first week.
One Direction will be performing new songs from this album on their worldwide stadium tour starting next summer.
