If you are big on horror films, do not, I repeat do not see the movie Mama. It's creepy and strangely compelling but Mama is not the movie to see if you want a good scare. Sure it's full of cheap gore, but overall there are very minimum thrilling parts. The back story is amazing and holds a very sentimental tell. It's a creepy, well-crafted and visually pleasing film, but after a fine setup it degenerates into a cheesy supernatural thriller.
This movie tells the haunting of two little girls who disappear into the woods the day their mother was murdered by their father, Jeffrey. The sisters Victoria and Lily are taken from their home by their father, who seems to be a little deranged. He rushes them into his car and drives on a mountain road until his car skids and crashes into the woods. He then takes his daughters and walks to a nearby cabin for shelter. While in the cabin, Jeffrey plans to kill his daughters and himself but is stopped by "Mama," a tall female figure dressed and rags with messy brown hair. Mama saves the girls from their father and takes care of them until they are found by their Uncle Lucas's private investigators. For five long years Lucas has been madly searching for the girls, hoping to bring them home into a stable environment. During his searching he meets his girlfriend Annabel, who is clearly an unfit mother but predictably turns out to play a major role in saving the children from Mama despite her feelings of them in the beginning. The kids are found alive in a decrepit cabin, the couple wonders if the girls are the only guests they have welcomed into their home after a list of strange events take place.
The ghost story from the midpoint on becomes very tedious. The climax offers an unimpressive explanation of who the ‘mama’ character is and why she is obsessed with the two little girls who stumbled into her cabin.
